Black Friday shopper fooled by fake MacComedy story

One of the sites I maintain is MacComedy, which features news parodies about Apple, the Mac, iPod, iPhone and other geek-related humor. I recently wrote a story about some “great deals” Apple’s retail stores were having on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

The story was obviously fake, saying Apple was giving away free copies of Windows Vista and enabling iPhones to send and receive picture messages (which they don’t currently do). It also said that anyone who brought in a letter for Apple CEO Steve Jobs would receive a free copy of Final Cut Studio 2. This was a witty reference to a kid in Connecticut who actually did receive a free copy after writing to Jobs.

On December 3, someone posted a comment in another MacComedy story, saying he went to an Apple Store with his daughters at 2:30am (my article said that’s when the stores would be opening) but the store was closed. He went back later and the Apple employees said the free copy of Final Cut Studio 2 was not real. Besides the fact he posted the comment after the wrong story, I just figured the guy was making this up to add to the overall hilariousness of the site.

But then another guy posts a comment in the Black Friday story, saying “Your website is a lie, and a cheat.” He then points me to a discussion on Apple’s support forums where the same guy that complained above also posted the same complaint there! Then there’s a whole discussion with others about the situation, with great quotes like, “If you took that website seriously, you deserve everything you get,” and one that mocks the site for its lack of regular updates. Hey! My only regret is that they didn’t link to the story.

I don’t know if this is legit, but for the guy to take it that far makes me think that it is. And that’s why I do this. For the giggles.

Just because it’s on the Internet doesn’t mean it’s true.
