Who should you support for president?

January 8th, 2008 | by Jeremy |

I took a Minnesota Public Radio quiz that helps you determine who you should support for president, based on your answers to a few questions. I had a three way tie between Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter. I never heard of Duncan Hunter before, but I guess he’s a Republican congressman from California…

Then I took another survey which had Hunter as the clear leader for me. Giuliani was second and Mitt Romney was third. Geez, poor Hunter! I never heard of him and these surveys are telling me he should be my top pick!

Anyway, they’re helpful quizzes. I wonder if anyone takes them and is really surprised by the results. Like they find out they support Dennis Kucinich or something…

ann, you may have the comment of the year on Jeremy’s blog. Love it.

(For me: Kucinich, Obama, Clinton, Edwards in a near tie, Gravel and Paul not far behind)

BTW, I don’t like these polls, they are not framed to maximize objectivity … and this one in particular acts like a politician with a grab-bag of issues politicians/media have deemed important.

So, if there were a poll that focused on energy and debt related issues, I would think it best … but again, it would be framed to speak to me, so it might not help someone else.

Here’s a great article about how people zero in on who they vote for: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/30/AR2007123002287.html

Like we talked about at work in 2000/1 — how could you be undecided?

BTW, I have a bunch of election links here: http://del.icio.us/dketterick/2008

Wouldn’t it be great if an underdog put together a survey site that said you should vote for him no matter what your answers to the survey were?

Interesting article, Dan. I also think there’s people out there who deliberately seek out the underdogs and the less popular and back them in large part because they are the underdog. (whether they realize they’re doing that or not) Like the kids in high school who tried to be the anti-trend crowd but just end up making a trend of their own.

While I agree these surveys can be slanted, I like them because it takes the candidate (and the groupthink mentioned in the Washing Post article) out of the equation for a bit and just focuses on certain issues. I know people out there who just vote the party line based on the party they identify with and not even know why they support a particular candidate. (and possibly not know why they support a particular party, just that their parents/friends/favorite actor support that party…)

BTW, when rating movies on Netflix, I do feel myself being persuaded by the rating that Netflix guessed I would rate it. And I hate myself for it.

i guess any poll where it says i should vote for kucinich is worth a second read. i guess i am more of a tree-hugger, quasi-socialist than i thought…

i took another poll (can’t find the link) that just picks one candidate for you based on your responses. it chose obama for me. i like this poll better because it made my choice for me and i am a lazy american so what can be better. thinking is hard.

Like your Minnesota Public radio quiz, this quiz allows you to weight the question’s imporatnace to you. I think somehting like that is needed in any of these quizzes.

While these questions aren’t perfect either, it gives you more options to choose from in categories like social security privatization and gay marriage.

I was McCain in the gotoQuiz. Which I do find myself agreeing with McCain a lot. However, I did have some Democrats higher than a few Republicans.

In Minnesota’s I was Hunter, so the creator of that one must have a Hunter slant if Jeremy and I both got him.
