August 15th, 2003 | by Jeremy |A massive power problem of some sort caused millions of people to be in the dark between NYC and Detroit yesterday afternoon, including me here in Cleveland.
It happened after 4 p.m. and I was at work until past midnight. Driving home through downtown Cleveland and the darkened highways was different, but I kinda liked it.
The moon was about three-quarters full and was really lighting up a lot of the night. My wife and I took a walk at about 1:30 a.m. along a main roadway that would normally have been littered with light pollution. But it was calm. Peaceful. Quiet.
It was interesting because just a week earlier, I was reading an article about how too much light 24 hours a day may be harmful for people, animals, and the environment. Walking around last night in true darkness felt so much better. Now don’t get me wrong, I love my computer, television, and other modern conveiniences that run on electricity. But do we really need street lights blazing light in all directions, preventing it from ever being in natural darkness?
So I’m anti-street light. I don’t think they’re needed. They don’t prevent crime. Cars don’t need them because cars have headlights of their own. People don’t need them because they can carry a flashlight if it’s too dark. So let’s turn them off.
